Return or Re-relinquish a Bird to Phoenix Landing

Parrots may live a long time, and need a succession of good homes. As stated in Phoenix Landing's adoption contract, if any bird adopted through Phoenix Landing needs a new home, s/he returns to Phoenix Landing for that home.
Bringing birds in who need to be returned to Phoenix Landing is our top priority. However, being volunteer-based, it can still take time for space to open in a possible home, foster home, or at the adoption center. So, if you need to return a bird to us, we appreciate as much advanced notice as possible.
If a bird you adopted through Phoenix Landing needs a new home, here are the steps to take to return him or her:
What if a family member or friend wishes to adopt my bird?
If you have a family member or friend who is interested in adopting your bird - wonderful! Please direct them to the Phoenix Landing website to complete an adoption application, ask them to attend a qualifying class, and to sign a foster or adoption contract with us prior to moving the bird to them. We still want all adopters to go through our regular adoption process. If Phoenix Landing does not provide an updated veterinary exam, and the parrot's cage, supplies, etc. all move to the new home with the bird, then the adoption fee will likely be waived in those circumstances.

If a bird you adopted through Phoenix Landing needs a new home, here are the steps to take to return him or her:
- Send an updated relinquishment form to [email protected] as soon as you know you must part with your bird. Phoenix Landing will connect you with the adoption coordinator for your area. The reason we like to have a new relinquishment form is to obtain updated information about the bird's diet, health, and habits, in order to find the best next home environment possible for your bird. Please also send an updated picture of your bird.
- The adoption coordinator for your area will then start to look for good homes for your bird. If you included a picture, we may also highlight your bird in our monthly newsletter, on Petfinder, and other places, to help connect with potential homes. All interested parties will still follow our established adoption process.
- Please be patient. It may still take several weeks or more, depending on the situation at the time, to bring a bird back into our adoption program. Whenever possible, we like to move a bird directly to a home that may wish to adopt him/her. Birds are resilient, and can handle multiple transitions to fosters, of course, but we still try to minimize moving a bird around if we can. Sometimes a great home is identified, but is located in another state and transportation needs to be worked out, which can also take time.
