Do you love cockatoos?
Perhaps you share your life with one but don't always understand his or
her behavior. Oftentimes the key is knowing how parrots act and
respond in the wild.
It is important that we learn
how parrots live in their native habitats -- what they eat, their nesting
habits, their relationships within their flock, and their ways of
responding to danger and predators.
Did you know
that several cockatoo species are at risk of
extinction in the wild?
We simply cannot let that happen.
Indonesia has
some of the most spectacular birds in the world. However, habitat
destruction and illegal logging have decimated their numbers. Many
are now on the brink of extinction. The local people have resorted
to trapping and selling these birds just to feed their families. In
addition, many of these birds suffer horrid conditions during capture and
smuggling, and many die in transit.
Mission and Purpose
PROJECT BIRD WATCH (a non-profit
corporation) is an
all-volunteer group of bird lovers working toward four main goals:
1.
Helping conserve endangered
cockatoos and parrots indigenous to Indonesia. These include the
Moluccan Cockatoo (also known as the Seram cockatoo), the
Citron-crested cockatoo, the Palm cockatoo, and the Great-bill
parrot.
2.
Helping local villagers to develop other sustainable sources of
income (jobs) at the sites where these native birds reside.
This will reduce the number of parrots which are trapped and sold on
the black market.
3.
Improving the welfare
of Indonesian parrots (especially cockatoos) in
captivity.
4.
Serving as a source of information and
education concerning these three goals.
