Our adoptable birds are not portrayed here, these are just some examples of the kinds of parrots that come to us, from the best and worst of situations.
We have hundreds of birds in foster, from parakeets to macaws. Our coordinators will work with you to find the best species and personality for your home. Please
think first about the needs of parrots. What
kind of bird will work well with your family, schedule
and capabilities?
Understanding the attributes of various parrot species
is important. It is also essential to make sure
that the personal connection between each individual parrot and
the adopting family is just right. We want our
families and birds to succeed for many years.
The first step is to send an application, begin
talking with us, and attend our educational seminars.
You can meet some of our adoptable parrots at all our seminars. Our goal is to help each parrot find stability and the
best possible place to call home. We offer hands-on training to help our families and parrots
become more comfortable with each other.
SOME of our parrots are listed on PetFinders
at www.petfinder.org/shelters/VA278.html,
however, it is very important that you
not apply for one specific bird. Let us work with you to make the best match for every bird in our care.
Thanks for considering adoption first and for Helping Parrots!

"MELODY"
- is a wild caught sulphur crested cockatoo. She
came from across the ocean almost 20 years ago. She is very
sweet, but she likes to have her independent time. A very nice
combination for a cockatoo! Give her a "workshop" [a cart or
box of assorted wood, plastic and other fun materials] and enjoy hanging
out together. She's beautiful, isn't she? |

 |
"THE GOOBERS"
- this loving pair just have to have fun. Every
now then there is a little domestic dispute, but as you
can see, they appreciate each other very much.
They appreciate their human companions too. |
|
"LUNA"
- this beautiful macaw came from a wonderful
family. But like many before them, they found that
having small children and large macaws was not
compatible.
Before
bringing a large bird into your family, think about your
future lifestyle and whether or not a parrot will still
be able to be an active part of your "flock."
These birds should live many, many decades when their
home is a healthy and enriched one.

"TOPAZ"
- Topaz is a male Moluccan cockatoo with
special needs. He has been pulling his feathers out for
many years, and often the reasons for this are very hard to
determine. We are hopeful that soon he will learn to use
his energy in other ways. His past was not the best, so he has
some reason to be unsure of his world. We are looking
for the most secure, dedicated person we can find to offer him his
well deserved safe "landing."
Did you
know that the dander of certain parrot species
(cockatoos, greys, cockatiels) can be especially hard on
your lungs? It is imperative that a proper air
filter be used. Many birds are relinquished to us
when their owners develop lung problems.
We don't want our adopted birds to lose their
homes for this reason. |
|
 |
"ROCKY"
- is a 5-year old yellow collared macaw, with a
slightly deformed beak. Rocky wants to be near family
activity, loves to take showers, and can be trusted to hang out on
his cage much of the day. It's always best to maximize a
bird's time out of the cage, when safely possible. |
|
|
"MARCO"
- is an extremely sweet male eclectus.
As you can see, he has been a feather plucker, but lots of new
feathers are growing in, and we are ecstatic!! A good change
in diet (mainly fresh, healthy food) is making all the difference.
Marco has an opinion on just about everything, and he expresses it
with such charm and delight. |

 |
"MANU"
is a beautiful blue and gold macaw.
She was wild caught and lived with one couple for 18
years. Her favorite person "Frank" died, and
she remained cage bound thereafter. She is
now with a wonderful foster mom who gives her abundant
time, space, and good nutrition. The
handicap for Manu is that she has a papilloma (small
benign type tumor), which means that she needs to live
in household without other birds. This is not
contagious to humans, but is possibly a problem for
other birds. However, it does not keep Manu
from living a full, healthy life and it does not require
any specific care other than an annual visit to the vet
(which ALL birds require!). |

THE LITTLE GUYS!
We always have several
parakeets,
cockatiels
and LOVEBIRDS
who would appreciate a new and attentive home.
Consider checking with us before you go to a pet store
for a small feathered companion.
This
page is dedicated to Magpie,
a beautiful military macaw found near death
on the floor of his cage in a pet store. After
5 days in the hospital, we lost Magpie. With proper medical care
and housing throughout his life, he probably
would not have gotten sick.
Please
be very careful about where you spend your
dollars!
